  About Joy  조이

Joy 조이 is the main rapper of Red Velvet.

Joy was born Park Sooyoung 박수영 on Tuesday, September 3, 1996, in Jeju Province.

She was born in the Chinese Year of the Rat and her star sign is Virgo.  Joy, Irene, and Seulgi all share the blood type A.

At a height of 165 cm or 5'5", Joy is the tallest member of Red Velvet.  She's taller than the shortest members, Wendy and Yeri, by 5 cm.

As a child, Joy was interested in modern trot music. In grade school, she was influenced to become a singer after receiving praise for her rendition of K-rock band Cherry Filter's song "Flying Duck." She auditioned and was cast by S.M. Entertainment at the S.M. Global Audition in Seoul in 2012. She trained under the agency for two years, during which time a vocal coach gave her the stage name "Joy."

Joy was formally introduced as the fourth member of Red Velvet on July 29, 2014. She is the only member of the group who was not introduced as a part of SM Rookies before the group's debut. The group made their music debut with the digital single "Happiness" on August 1, 2014.

She graduated from School of Performing Arts Seoul in February 2015.

In 2015, Joy joined the fourth season of reality show "We Got Married," where she was paired with BtoB member Sungjae.  She was featured in her first solo pictorial in Korean fashion magazine CéCi, concurrent to modeling for Etude House cosmetics.  She and Sungjae won Best Couple at the MBC Entertainment Awards, where Joy also won the award for 2015's New Star of the Year. On April 16, 2016, the two of them released a duet called "Young Love."  The song peaked at #52 on the Gaon Singles Chart.  They left "We Got Married" on May 7.

In mid 2016, S.M. Entertainment issued an official photo series for Joy, released once a week via Vyrl mobile applications and SM Town Now. It is entitled Enjoy your Monday with Joy. Joy collaborated with Lim Seulong in a duet titled "Always in My Heart" under S.M. Entertainment's SM Station released on November 4, 2016. The song peaked at #2 on Soribada, Genie, and Bugs streaming charts and #10 on Gaon.

Joy made her acting debut in tvN's musical drama "The Liar and His Lover" alongside Lee Hyunwoo. It aired March 2017 and was a Korean drama adaptation of the titular Japanese manga by Kotomi Aoki.

She has two younger sisters.
