Boyfriend 보이프렌드 is a six-member boy group under Starship Entertainment formed in 2011. They are the first boy band to have twin members. The group consists of Kim Donghyun, Shim Hyunseong, Lee Jeongmin, Jo Youngmin, Jo Kwangmin, and No Minwoo. They debuted on Mnet's "M Countdown" on May 26, 2011, with "Boyfriend."
They've released three Korean and four Japanese singles, as well as a full-length album and four mini-albums.
Jo Youngmin and Jo Kwangmin trained under JYP Entertainment for two years. By their 100th day mark of being child actors, the twins had appeared in over 300 commercials. During his high school years, Donghyun starred in a variety show called "Conduct Zero" where six rebellious high school students were made into exemplary students.
On May 26, 2011, Starship Entertainment released their debut single "Boyfriend." In response to fans concerned that the group had limited its appeal in mid-July, Boyfriend changed their choreography for their single "Boyfriend" when appearing on music shows after rehearsing for two days. After ending their promotions for "Boyfriend," the group followed up with the song "You & I," which received a more positive response from music critics.
On October 6, Boyfriend put out a second single, "Don't Touch My Girl." Their December 2011 single "I'll Be There" peaked at #2 on the Gaon music charts.
Boyfriend signed a contract with Japanese management agency Being. Their first Japanese special album, We Are Boyfriend, was released on June 6. They marked their debut with a 10,000 seat showcase on June 30 at the Nippon Budokan. On May 2, Hyunseong released a solo song, "Only You," for the OST of "The King 2 Hearts."
Their debut Japanese single song was "Be My Shine." Boyfriend released their first mini-album Love Style on June 14, 2012. On July 1, Boyfriend successfully completed their debut Japanese showcase First Date with Boyfriend in Japan at the Nippon Budokan.
Boyfriend's first full-length album Janus was released in November 2012.
On December 3, Boyfriend released short videos for their 2nd Japanese double singles “Dance Dance Dance” and “My Lady.“ The boys held a high touch event in celebration of their second single album, Kimi to Dance Dance Dance/My Lady, on December 1 and 2 at the Kobe World Hall and the Saitama Super Arena. Boyfriend performed their 1st solo Japanese concert, Love Communication 2012 ~Xmas Bell~. They held 5 concerts at the Tokyo Dome City Hall from December 22 to 24 with a total of 12,500 fans. KBS Joy released a video teaser for Boyfriend's "Hello Baby" on December 27. The members started shooting for the reality series in December, and the first broadcast began airing on January 4, 2013 at 11PM KST.
"Hitomi no Melody“ ("Melody of Eyes") is the title song of their 3rd Japanese single album, which was released on March 27. The song was picked up as the ending theme song for "Detective Conan," and there was a "Detective Conan" album version in addition to the regular album versions. "Hitomi no Melody“ charted among the top 5 for 6 days, peaking at 2nd place on Oricon.
On May 23, Starship Entertainment officially announced that Boyfriend would make a comeback with a new digital single entitled "On & On" on the 28th as a surprise gift to celebrate the group's second year anniversary. Starship Entertainment released a music video teaser on 27th and on the next day they released their official music video.
On May 30th, Donghyun was cast to play the lead male role in the musical 1000th Man. The musical was first presented at Shibuya AiiA Theater Tokyo on September 28, 2013. On June 14, Jeongmin was rushed to a hospital after Boyfriend's schedule in Japan; he was diagnosed with acute appendicitis and had to rest for 17 days after being discharged. Jeongmin took a break from activities and Boyfriend promoted as 5 during this period.
Boyfriend released a special Christmas premium single in Japan on November 20. The single is entitled "Pinky Santa," a nod both to the color pink and to the pinky finger, which is used in a gesture when making a promise. "Pinky Santa" rose to number 5 on Oricon's Weekly Single Chart.
Boyfriend successfully wrapped up their solo concert in Puerto Rico, the first-ever Kpop group to do so. On March 8, the group performed in front of 1,700 fans at the Centro De Bellas Artes Luis A Ferre. Boyfriend also performed in the USA for the first time. They went to Chicago on March 11 and Dallas on March 13.
On March 26, 2014, Boyfriend released their 4th Japanese single "My Avatar" together with a music video.
On May 15, 2014, they posted selcas while shooting for their music video. On May 21, 2014, a short trailer was posted on their official YouTube channel. Obsession, Boyfriend's second mini-album, was released on June 4. They released a music video for "Alarm."
On October 9, Boyfriend performed their comeback stage, "Witch," on "M Countdown." The related music video was released on October 12, while the album was released on October 13. They had their first solo concert, 2014 Boyfriend, The First Chapter in Seoul Bewitch on November 23, 2014 at Olympic Hall, Olympic Park.
On March 6, 2015, Boyfriend released a new music video for their comeback with the single "Bounce." The mini-album Boyfriend in Wonderland was released on March 9. The music video follows the Alice in Wonderland motif. The group's world tour, 2015 Boyfriend, the First Chapter in Taiwan (Bewitch), started with a first stop in Taiwan in April. The following month, the group had their first South America tour in Brazil, Argentina, Bolivia, and Mexico and also their European tour including stops in Finland, Russia, and Paris.
In May, they released a special music video and single titled, "To My Best Friend," in celebration of their fifth anniversary.
In October, they released their eighth Japanese single, "Jackpot," along with its music video. It was released in four different versions
